More offshore stories.......

Today, as usual, while having dinner, my senior would be sharing a lot of his past experience, his past stories as an offshore veteran. There are sure a lot of stories from him. But today, he mentioned stories that kinda are related to our current politics, and it really got me thinking.

He mentioned about how the customs at ports always take money, how they take bribes, and some certain countries, they just make random checks just to see what can they take from your luggage. It sounds absurd right? But it happens. For instant, in this particular third world country, the customs would ransack your bag, and if you have anything, ranging from a coca-cola (yes, just a can of coca-cola), to you i-pod, they will just take it. I even heard of a case of these customs making random checks on girls, mind you, these customs are males, and they basically took advantage of the poor girls. But what can you do? Complain about them? If they do find out that you are the one complaining about them, they can just put a small bag of heroine into your luggage and frame you for drugs possession. And yes, these customs people have bags of drugs prepared somewhere to just 'slot' into your luggage if you ever offend them.

So how are all these related to our politics? Dirty money, bribery, sexual scandal... so many of them. And this the thing that got me thinking:

Why are humans such horrible beings? Sometimes it makes me wonder, in what way humans are more superior compared to animals? So many people are acting like animals! I know, many people would relate it to sin, and yes, so would I. Sin would be the main culprit in this case. However, we can choose whether we want to sin. All these are choices we make in our life. My senior even made this comment, somehow he feels that in this current world, there are no other ways of getting rich if you do not do any of these 'activities'. Somehow it is true. It is difficult to be rich by just being nice. The classic example is this, you want to open a business, definitely you would need a permit from the authorities. The authorities has only one permit and so happen your competitor outdo you in the sense of bribery. You just want to do a clean business but you don't get the permit. Why? Because you decided to want to be clean. This is very real in our current world.

Back to the sin part. Like I said, many including myself would associate these wrong doings to sin. But choice here would play a big role as well. So why do people choose to be such horrible beings? Thinking about it, do we have a choice? The world is so bad right now, that the good people have no choice but to be dirty as well. This is really disturbing. This has been really disturbing. Is it possible to lead an honest lifein the current world now?
